Presentation: Getting Involved with ICC and NFPA Code Updates

Description:

Enjoy a two-part presentation from our local representatives!

Learn how the International Code Council’s and National Fire Protection Association's transparent, consensus‑based systems shape the I‑Codes and NFPA codes and standards that we use every day. This session provides a concise walkthrough of the code development cycle for both organizations - committee roles, hearings, public participation, and final voting - and highlights how anyone can get involved.

Guest Presenters: Sarah Carter and Bob Sullivan, CFPS

Sarah Carter, ICC Fire and Disaster Mitigation Program Manager, has over two decades of experience in construction and code compliance in both the Building and Fire service arenas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Project Management along with several ICC certifications. With her unique perspective and extensive experience in project design and regulatory compliance, she is a passionate leader in advancing the consensus process for developing the ICC model codes.

Bob Sullivan is NFPA’s Southwest Regional Director, assisting with code adoptions, legislative advocacy, training, public education, and stakeholder engagement in the states of Colorado, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Wyoming. Mr. Sullivan has over 32 years of experience serving on fire departments in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Colorado, including several years as a company officer. Prior to coming to NFPA, he served on the Thornton Fire Department in Colorado as the Senior Fire Protection Engineer and Deputy Fire Marshal, focusing on new development construction and fire code enforcement. He also previously worked for National Foam Inc./Kidde Firefighting USA, and Industrial Risk Insurers. He has a master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS).
